GEO vs SEO: what is the difference?

The same foundation, a different goal. SEO wants a place in the list. GEO wants a place in the answer.

In short

  • SEO optimises for a position in a list of ten blue links. GEO optimises for a place in an answer the engine writes itself.
  • They share the technical foundation. Crawlability, schema.org, speed and a logical information structure. If your SEO is in order, you already have half of GEO in place.
  • The biggest difference is in how you measure it. SEO has positions and Search Console. GEO has no position. You are named or you are not, and that differs per user and per moment.
  • One classic SEO technique demonstrably backfires. Keyword stuffing performed worse than doing nothing in the KDD study.
  • You do not replace SEO with GEO. You put GEO on top of it.

Where they overlap

About half of the work is the same, and that is good news if you have invested in SEO for years.

  • Crawlability.A page Googlebot cannot read, GPTBot or ClaudeBot cannot read either. And AI crawlers have to be let in separately in your robots.txt, or they stay outside while Google walks in.
  • Schema.org.Structured data tells both systems what a page is. For GEO, what counts most is whether your organisation is recognisable as an entity.
  • Information structure.Headings that ask a question and paragraphs that answer it help both a featured snippet and an AI answer.
  • Authority. For SEO, links are a ranking signal. For GEO, the mention itself is the signal, even without a link.

Where they differ

There is no position

In SEO you know where you stand. An AI answer has no ranking. Two users who ask the same question at the same moment get different answers. So one screenshot of ChatGPT naming you proves nothing, and neither does one that leaves you out. Only a repeated measurement across several engines is a measurement.

Length works differently

SEO rewards depth. The page that covers a topic most completely often wins. A generative engine looks for the shortest piece of text that fully answers the question. A four-line paragraph with a number and a source gets picked up sooner than a two-thousand-word chapter.

Your own site is not enough

You can win SEO mostly on your own domain. Not GEO. A model only names you once others name you. Trade media, comparison articles, review platforms, industry associations. That is the slowest lever, and the only one that makes the difference between being named and not.

Clicks are not the return

Measured across 107,000 websites, all AI assistants together sent 0.39% of referral traffic, against 26.4% for Google (Ahrefs, June 2026). If you judge GEO on sessions in Analytics, you will conclude it does not work. The return is in the shortlist that forms before the first visit.

What to do first

  • Measure your starting point.Twenty to thirty questions your buyers really ask, put to several engines. Without a baseline, every later claim is impossible to prove.
  • Let AI crawlers in.Check your robots.txt for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. It takes minutes, and at many companies it is the reason they are invisible.
  • Make your existing strong pages quotable.Put the answer in the first paragraph, add a number with a source, and end with an FAQ. You do not need to rewrite, only to restructure.
  • Work on mentions outside your domain.Trade media, comparison articles, review platforms. Start with the sources the engine already cites for your core question.
  • Repeat the measurement every month. Not to score points, but to see which sources shift.

And keep your SEO. The technical base is the same, and the organic traffic you have today pays for tomorrow's work.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about GEO and SEO

Does GEO replace my SEO?

No. GEO is a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement. They share the technical base, and today Google still sends more than sixty times as much traffic as all AI assistants together. If you tear down your SEO to invest in GEO, you lose revenue you need to pay for the GEO work.

If my SEO is good, am I automatically visible in AI?

Partly. Your technical base is in place, which is a big advantage. But three things are usually missing. AI crawlers are not explicitly allowed in robots.txt, the content is written for length instead of for being quoted, and there are too few mentions on sources outside your own domain.

Can I measure GEO the way I measure SEO?

Not with the same tools. There is no Search Console for ChatGPT and no position to track. What does work is a fixed set of 20 to 30 questions, put to several engines every month, where you track whether you get named, how you are described and which sources are cited.

Do SEO techniques like keyword stuffing work for GEO too?

No, and keyword stuffing even backfires. In the 2024 KDD study it performed worse than the baseline. What did work were source citations, literal quotes and statistics, with a relative improvement of 30 to 40% on the visibility measure.

What do I do first if my budget is limited?

A baseline and your robots.txt. The baseline costs nothing but time and turns every later discussion into facts. Letting AI crawlers in is a change of a few lines, and at many companies it is the direct cause of being invisible. Content and PR come after that.
